Every Christmas since 1957 when it was first televised, people from across the world have gathered around their TV sets at 15:00 GMT for the Queen’s Speech. In recent years, the Queen has spoken more about her own Christian faith hoping to offer those listening an example of ‘the value of doing small things with great love’.
Two British icons meet for tea. One, a refugee bear from Peru called Paddington. The other, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. But what do they both have in common? Marmalade sandwiches, of course, smuggled in their hats and handbags.
Her Majesty’s subjects long understood one thing about their sovereign: if you wished to see her smile, find a horse. From the grounds of Balmoral to Royal Ascot, no one could doubt her immense love for the beasts she referred to as ‘the great levellers’
Despite the heavy rain on the 2nd June 1953, thousands of people lined the roads around Westminster Abbey to watch the Queen’s coronation. A further 38 million listened on the TV and radio as their new ruler promised to spend her life striving to be worthy of their trust.
